Unmasking Autism

Writer's picture: Rae Sabine Rae Sabine

I found this book to be an insightful resource, despite some inaccuracies in terminology. It recognises that for every visibly Autistic person, there are numerous ‘masked’ people who pass as neurotypical. These people may not conform to traditional Autistic stereotypes and often feel they have to hide their true identities, spending years suppressing their Autistic traits.

The research indicates that Autism remains significantly under diagnosed among women, people of colour, transgender folks, and those who are gender non-conforming, many of whom are beginning to recognise their Autistic traits later in life. This book presents a compelling case for embracing radical authenticity and non-conformity with a focus on personal safety.

In “Unmasking Autism,” Dr. Devon Price skilfully integrates cutting-edge research, personal narratives and practical exercises aimed at fostering self-expression. He calls for societal change, equipping readers with the tools necessary to discover their genuine selves and contribute to the creation of an inclusive society where all people can flourish on their own terms.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
