Tomorrow will be different

Writer's picture: Rae Sabine Rae Sabine

“I’m sad that we live in a world where people aren’t always respected, particularly for their gender identities and sexual orientations. The recent US election made me feel more tired and disappointed than anything else. But I find that a helpful way to put things into perspective is looking at the data—in many cases, taking a broad view of progress can make me feel very optimistic. Sometimes what seems like a reversal of progress is a small dip in an otherwise upwards trend. I made these computer wallpapers, which combine pride flags with simple visualisations of some important trends in queer legal rights, as a way to celebrate the progress that has been made and will, hopefully, continue. I added the phrase “Tomorrow will be different”, which has been my mantra lately, in celebration of the election of Sarah McBride to the US congress. Certainly we need to work smart and hard to protect our rights and the rights of others, but when we do so, progress can and does happen.”

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
