The Tree

Writer's picture: Rae Sabine Rae Sabine

"When I was growing up, my parents sometimes got loud about their inability to communicate and my brothers being 9 and 11 years younger than me meant that the house was often full of someone screaming, crying, or just otherwise being loud. There was a tree just far enough away from the house that I couldn't hear any of it, and it was right next to the chook shed, where the hens made me feel less alone. I would climb the tree and just sit, not even really thinking. Even though the circumstances were less than ideal, it's still a place of comfort and safety in my mind. It's one of my favourite pieces of art that I've made with Rae."
