The Transgender Issue

Writer: Rae Sabine Rae Sabine

I was recently told it might not be the right time to read this book, but I disagree. Currently, transgender folks have unfortunately become a focal point in a culture war. They are at the centre of a divisive and toxic debate that fuels controversy in media outlets. This media frenzy obscures a critical issue: we are engaged in the wrong conversation, one in which transgender people are often reduced to mere talking points, thereby stripping them of a meaningful voice.

In her impactful book, Shon Faye reclaims the concept of the “transgender issue” to illuminate the realities of being transgender in a society that exhibits transphobia. She offers a comprehensive analysis of trans lives across all age groups, examining aspects such as employment, family dynamics, housing, healthcare, the penal system, and trans participation within the LGBTQ+ and feminist movements in contemporary Britain and beyond.

“The Transgender Issue” serves as a seminal work that marks the commencement of a healthier dialogue regarding transgender life. It stands as a manifesto for change and a call for justice and solidarity among all marginalised groups. Shon Faye’s advocacy for the liberation of transgender folks explores essential inquiries regarding the nature of our society and its possibilities. It presents a vision for a more just, equitable, and fulfilling world for all.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
