The Invisible Issue

Writer's picture: Rae Sabine Rae Sabine

Isla Bell was the heartbreaking 85th woman lost to violence in Australia in 2024. She was a shining star at @amplifiedvic (AKA Girls Rock!) in 2020, the very year I ran a workshop for young women like her.

It pains me deeply to say that women’s voices often fall on deaf ears. For years, I have desperately tried to reach out to men, urging them to recognise the power they hold to ignite real change.

Time and time again, when I encourage men to engage in meaningful conversations with one another, to hold each other accountable, I am often met with dismissive disbelief, as if the issue is invisible.

Brothers, please do not wait for the issue to arise in conversation. Step up and advocate. Let’s come together to confront and dismantle the toxic behaviour that leads to the relentless cycle of gender violence.

We owe it to Isla and to every woman who has suffered in silence.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
