The Arousal-Valence Model

Writer's picture: Rae Sabine Rae Sabine

The Arousal-Valence Model is a visual tool for identifying emotions, integrating body awareness to enhance interoception and provide a holistic understanding. It graphs emotions along two axes:

Arousal: indicates the emotion’s intensity or energy level, with high-energy emotions positioned higher, while low-energy emotions are lower.

Valence: reflects the emotion’s relationship to how pleasant or unpleasant they feel. Placing pleasant emotions on the right and unpleasant emotions on the left.

This model has four quadrants based on arousal and valence. Identifying the quadrant for a specific emotion can improve your understanding of your emotional landscape.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
