“I’ve been enjoying silence and solitude lately. This is the secret sparkly underground river; it feels like it’s always there inside me. It’s secret and underground because I like silence and old ruins. Of course the river has fish in it, because fish are beautiful, but they like to hide beneath the surface. There are also my three dogs and me! My dogs get me like nobody else does, and their company is more nourishing and healing than anybody else’s.
This image consists of multiple AI-generated components, which I’ve modified, refined and combined myself. Like most people, I’m uneasy about the ethics of AI image generation, and I think the ethics is something that we need to take seriously. When it comes to purely personal use, I enjoy the accessibility aspect; on days when I feel exhausted and don’t have the energy to create something manually, using AI-assisted image generation is a way to be creative and mentally engaged. I think this accessibility is a real benefit that should be considered as part of this conversation. (Of course, the ethics for commercial use are very different, and I certainly support paying professional artists and designers for art that will be used in commercial projects; having thought about both image generation and large language models in detail, I don’t think these tools yet offer the quality to replace human professionals in anything other than very simple and supervised components of commercial projects.)”
