Protect Transgender Lives

Writer's picture: Rae Sabine Rae Sabine

A report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics supports what we already know about high rates of violence against transgender people: the rate of violent victimisation of transgender people is 2.5 times higher than the rate among cisgender people. Nearly one in ten respondents were physically attacked because of their gender identity. It’s clear that transgender people are disproportionately violently victimised. There needs to be more done to protect the lives of transgender people.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
