Person-Centred Counselling for Trans and Gender Diverse People

Writer's picture: Rae Sabine Rae Sabine

This excellent book is one I often recommend to my supervisees as it provides arts therapists, counsellors, and other practitioners with all they need to know about working with trans and gender diverse clients. This person centred, affirmative approach focuses on forging a relationship and connection that is on an equal footing.

Given the current climate of panic and misinformation in this area, the book provides a much needed counterbalance: a straightforward, accessible, and engaging overview of how sex and gender work, what key terms mean, what is involved in various forms of transition, the impact of transphobia, and the importance of community, among other topics.

There are chapters covering autism and other forms of neurodivergence, diversity within trans communities, sex and sexuality, intersectionality, unconscious bias and reflective practice. I would whole heartily recommend this to any clinician or professional wanting to improve their knowledge in this area.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
