My Symbolic Box

Writer's picture: Rae Sabine Rae Sabine

“There are things hidden deeply in my box, that I usually don’t show anyone. There are things a bit closer to the door, which I show people sometimes, depending on the person and the situation. And there are things on the outside, which is how people tend to think about me. I like to make sure I spend time with all of these things.

I like working with symbols, because they’re really simple to draw (especially useful for when I need to rest to look after my body!) but carry powerful meanings. The symbols I’ve drawn, from most hidden (left) to least hidden) right: sexuality; Christianity and God; suicidal ideation; girls are made of magic; my inner child; Buddhist practice; books and nerdiness; maths; and my love and care for dear animals.”

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
