My Safe Place

Writer's picture: Rae Sabine Rae Sabine

“This is my safe place. I like it when there is heavy rain. It makes me feel really calm. Reading and working out make me feel happy and calm too. The animals are there because my safe place is a safe place for chickens and dogs and fish too. I was hesitant to put in the missiles - I’m very stubbornly non-violent, but I also fantasise about post-apocalyptic scenarios, purely so I can be in my own space! (I don’t actually want people to get hurt though.) And the church - I like old buildings, and I like religion, and it’d be much nicer to actually spend a time in a beautiful old church if it’s a world where all the people are gone!”

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
