My Mask

Writer's picture: Rae Sabine Rae Sabine

“I know my mask protects me. Without it I am exposed and much more vulnerable. I am starting to notice just how confining it is, stunting my growth and happiness. The longer I keep the mask on, the harder it is to take off.

I wanted to make something tangible to illustrate just how the tension is starting to grow between my instinct to protect myself and my desire to be myself. What was a great temporary solution is fast becoming a liability, especially as I start to embrace parts of me that I’ve seen as flaws since childhood.”

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
