Is this about me?

Writer's picture: Rae Sabine Rae Sabine

““Is this about me?”

10 year old me does not yet know the word for trans. They do not know that a word exists for how they are feeling inside.

22 year old me does. And they have made this box. With no doubts or insecurity, they stuck pistachio shells onto it, a picture of an alien trans baby and the bolded words, “Is it better to speak or to die?”.

10 year old me has not found their voice yet. They wrote in their journal, “I feel invisible”.

But now, we will always speak. We demand to be seen. We are nature and love, and soft and loud. Our growth is ever-evolving like the spiral drawn inside the box.

Without knowing, creating this box was a love letter to my 10 year old self.

I love you and I am proud of us. I hope you are too.”
