Don’t say “identity as”

Writer's picture: Rae Sabine Rae Sabine

Please stop using the phrase “identify as” when referring to someone’s identity.

It strips away the truth of who they are, reducing their existence to mere preference, rather than an intrinsic part of who they are.

I don’t “identify as” non-binary. I am non-binary and I’m proud of who I am. It is a matter of showing respect for the person’s identity.

Let’s lift each other up by affirming one another!

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
