Disability Inclusion Week

Writer's picture: Rae Sabine Rae Sabine

Discrimination and lack of access IS the barrier not US disabled people!

This week is particularly important to me as someone who is neurodivergent, chronically ill and deeply committed to disability rights.

It’s crucial to recognise that true inclusion and equity can only be achieved when we are the ones who make decisions about our own lives.

When we and our own decisions are centred in decision-making processes that affect our lives, we have the same opportunities as abled-people, which is the essence of disability inclusion.

Disability does not mean inability. Disabled people DESERVE TO have as much potential to pursue our dreams as abled-people.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
